Gmail Blacklisting

The server keeps being blacklisted temporarily at Gmail due to people forwarding spam to their Gmail accounts.

To stay off the blacklist, everyone needs to stop forwarding spam to their Gmail accounts.

Problem

You have a forward setup to forward e-mail from example@yourdomain.ext to example@gmail.com.

A spammer sends spam to example@yourdomain.ext.

example@yourdomain.ext forwards the spam to example@gmail.com.

Gmail thinks the forwarding server (the server hosing yourdomain.ext) sent the spam.

Gmail blacklists the entire server causing everyone on the server not to be able to send e-mail to Gmail.

Also if you mark forwarded spam as spam in Gmail, it will cause the server hosting your domain to be blocked. Never mark or report forwarded spam as spam.

Resolution

Instead of forwarding e-mail to gmail, setup gmail to download your e-mails from your e-mail account on our server.

  1. 1) Make sure you have the e-mail account created on our server
    2) Login to gmail
    3) Click settings
    4) Click "Accounts and Imports"
    5) Make sure you keep "Send mail as" set to your gmail address.

Please don't try to send e-mails from our server using gmail. If you tell gmail to send e-mail using our server, gmail will login to our SMTP mail several times per minute causing a high load resulting in the e-mail account being deleted by abuse. Just use gmail to send e-mails.

  1. 6) Click "Add a POP3 mail account you own"

You can add up to 5 POP3 accounts you want google to download e-mails from.

If you have more than 5 e-mail addresses you want google to get mail for, you could setup an e-mail address in Cpanel such as main@your-domain.com and then setup forwards in Cpanel for 6th@your-domain.com, 7th@your-domain.com, 8th-etc@your-domain.com to go to main@your-domain.com. Setup google to retrieve e-mail from only main@your-domain.com.
